Imagine This: From the Beginning to the End

Here is another way you can use visualization to program positive new health habits and achieve desired health goals. I call this method the alpha-to-omega technique. In this technique, visualize the current status of an issue (the beginning, or alpha), and continue creating the imagery that will take you to the desired ending (omega). Here is how Kristi used the alpha-to-omega technique to shed unwanted pounds.

First, she saw herself in her present overweight condition and felt her determination to lose weight. Next she pictured herself beginning her new diet and enjoying the taste of her new meals. She visualized herself at the grocery store, buying only healthy foods—fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt, fish, potatoes, and high-fiber cereals. She visualized her daily exercise routine of walking ten brisk laps around a nearby soccer field. And in her mind’s eye, she stood on a scale and watched the numbers going down, slowly but surely. She saw herself fitting into old clothes she had not been able to wear in years. And she saw herself in the end, slim, trim, and fit as a fiddle, jogging triumphantly around the soccer field.

Then she pictured a calendar and turned the pages of the months, starting with January and intuitively stopping at May. This is the time she will allot herself to reach her desired new weight, twenty pounds less than she weighs now. Kristi resolved to view this alpha-to-omega internal imagery script on a weekly basis, every Sunday afternoon, until the weight is gone.

PRACTICE: DEVISING YOUR OWN ALPHA-TO-OMEGA SCRIPT

Now modify Kristi’s script to envision your own future healthy self. If your weight is not a problem, choose another issue that has relevance to you. Be creative and have fun with this. Enjoy the process of making new changes, and anticipate with pleasure the new you that you will soon be in reality.

INTENTIONS, BELIEFS, AND HIDDEN ISSUES

To achieve and maintain a state of radiant health requires determination. Yet sometimes, though we desire such health, we fail to incorporate into our lives the simple principles that would turn this desire into a reality. I can give three reasons for this phenomenon. One is that we view the cultivation of health in a negative light—as drudgery and self-denial. Thus, the admonition to focus on the pleasures of exercise, a healthy diet, and so on. A second reason our good intentions may falter is due to hidden, self-sabotaging beliefs we may have about ourselves. Here is one example of how our beliefs can affect our health. For years my husband, Jim, got a cold every spring. Then one day he remembered his mother telling him as a child that getting a cold every spring was “good spring cleaning.” When he made this connection—his cold was created by the belief that he would get a cold in the spring—his colds stopped.

A person wishing to lose weight may believe that because his mother and grandmother were heavy, overweight is just in his genes; nothing he can do will change it.
